Summer is here! Connecting with Nature and its impact on our bodies and minds

Summer is here, which is a time that I like to remind my clients about a powerful medicine we have readily available to us in the summer, nature! Many people know that it feels good to step outside in the fresh air and take in the scents of a warm summer breeze. There is actually extensive research on the association between being out in nature and health. The NIH did a study in 2021 in which they extensively reviewed the literature on this topic from the past 10 years, and they found that being exposed to nature has the following impacts on the body:

  • Improved cognitive functioning
  • Improved Brain activity
  • Improved blood pressure
  • Improved mental health
  • Improved sleep

The “biophilia hypothesis” is the idea that humans have evolved with nature to have an affinity for nature. With this idea in mind, it is no wonder why so many people find relief from their mental health symptoms by spending time outside connecting with nature.

On a cellular level, nature produces high concentrations of negative ions, especially in places where there is significant air or water movement. The human body absorbs these ions when you breathe and touch nature. Once these negative ions enter the bloodstream, the body experiences an increase in serotonin and activates a relaxation response.

Southeastern Wisconsin has a plethora of walking trails, hiking trails, biking trails, and nature preservation areas that are just waiting for you to explore. As we know, being social is another protective factor to our mental health, so invite a friend or family member on a walk or bike ride and enjoy the benefits from both nature and social support!

I hope this insight encourages you to explore, connect, and find joy in the environment around you!
